How to Get the Most From Your Pilates Classes in 6 steps
Below are a few tips on how to get the most from your Pilates Classes, for both mind and body! Soak these in and apply them each time you attend a class. Your body and mind will benefit so much more.
Arrive Early: Make sure to arrive at 5-10 minutes early to find your focus and calm your body. There's nothing that can ruin your focus more than running late and jumping into a class that's already started. It breaks the flow with the instructor and the other folks in the class, plus you're starting off frazzled.
Be Present: Forget your to do list (or write it down before you get to class!). Think about your pelvic floor and initiating new muscles. One thing that is so wonderful about Pilates is being able to exercise your mind's ability to meditate on how your body is feeling and moving. When I talk about the mind-body connection, this is exactly what I mean.
Focus Internally: You are going to be in a class with people of all levels, so don't bother comparing your range of motion with your neighbor's. Fitness and building strength in Pilates is an individual journey, so do the best for your body and challenge your own abilities.
Be Intentional: Set goals for yourself and have accountability with your instructor; having good rapport is very beneficial. Take the instructor's cues and personalize them for your own body. Do your personal best with every exercise. (We can tell when you cheat!)
Clarify When Needed: If the instructor gives a clue that's over your head or you aren’t feeling the work, just ask. Your instructor will appreciate your honesty and give you cues to find the right muscle or movement. Usually it's an easy fix and you will gain more from the class than if you struggled through or failed to completely understand an exercise or movement.
Be Consistent: Don’t expect changes to happen when you aren’t coming to class regularly. Joseph Pilates said, "It takes 10 sessions to feel a difference, 20 sessions to see a difference, and in 30 sessions you will have a new body."
